Write reordering in a hybrid disk drive

A hybrid drive and associated methods increase the rate at which data are transferred to a nonvolatile storage medium in the hybrid drive. By using a large nonvolatile solid state memory device as cache memory for a magnetic disk drive, a very large number of write commands can be cached and subsequently reordered and executed in an efficient manner. In addition, strategic selection and reordering of only a portion of the write commands stored in the nonvolatile solid state memory device increases efficiency of the reordering process.

Hierarchical storage system, library apparatus, magazine, and control method of the hierarchical storage system

A hierarchical storage system has a disc drive, a library apparatus, and a control apparatus. The library apparatus houses a magazine that houses a cartridge. The cartridge has a first tag and stores a storage medium configured to store the data. The magazine has a second tag. The library apparatus acquires through radio communications first information held by the first tag and configured to identify the cartridge and second information held by the second tag and configured to identify the magazine. The library apparatus transmits to the control apparatus the acquired first and second information. The control apparatus memorizes the first and second information, and manages a location of the data based on a data transfer status between the disc drive and the library apparatus and the first information and the second information stored in the first memory.

Data-storage apparatus, data-storage method and recording/reproducing system

A data-storage apparatus, a data-storage method and a recording / reproducing system are provided, which effectively use the time elapsing before data is transferred to be written in a recording medium, such as disc-seeking time and disc-rotation standby time, thereby to raise the speed of transferring data. A hybrid storage apparatus has two storage areas, i.e., a disc and a nonvolatile solid-state memory. The disc and the memory have a disc cache area, a system area, and a user area each. If data is transferred from the host apparatus, it is written into the cache area of the nonvolatile solid-state memory that can be accessed at high speed for the first super cluster. While the data being so written, the head is moved to a prescribed position. Any data coming after the head is moved to this position is written into the cache area.

Video/audio recording and reproducing apparatus

An object of the present invention is to display, during data recording, the number of recording media that are required to store all of recorded data in the case where the recorded data is copied to the recording media, and to display a ratio of a recorded area to the capacity of the recording medium to which data is copied, and thereby to provide improved convenience. The capacity of a large-capacity recording medium such as a hard disk is divided into data fragments each of which is equivalent to the capacity of a small-capacity recording media such as an optical disc, so that data is recorded on a partition capacity basis. In addition, the number of used media each having the same amount as the partition capacity is displayed; and the amount of recorded data, or the remaining recordable capacity, based on the partition capacity, is also displayed.
