A write-once recording medium is provided, which comprises a management information area for recording management information for managing a recorded state, and a user data area for recording user data. The user data area is configured to contain at least one recording area. At least one session is configured to contain at least one of the at least one recording area. The management information contains range information indicating a recording range of the at least one recording area and identification information for identifying the recording area located at a boundary of the session.

A flow-based FIFO sub-system for a disk formatter in a data processing system that performs data width conversion. The sub-system has a first FIFO unit having a first width interfacing to a first bursting channel, and a second FIFO unit having a second width interfacing to a second bursting channel, the second width not being a multiple of the first width and the first width not being a multiple of the second width. Data width conversion is performed between the first FIFO unit and the second FIFO unit to convert data moving from the first FIFO unit to the second FIFO unit from the first width to the second width, and to convert data moving from the second FIFO unit to the first FIFO unit from the second width to the first width. The sub-system also includes an Error Correcting Code interface between the first FIFO unit and the second FIFO unit for performing in-line correction.

A recording apparatus is provided that includes a recording section for recording information onto a recording medium, a file system processing section for managing the information as a file using file system information having a directory hierarchy structure capable of being referenced using a path name, a contents management information processing section for managing the directory and the file using contents management information, and an extension information processing section for managing extension information with respect to the directory and the file. The contents management information includes media object management information for referencing the directory and the file using object reference information obtained by converting the path name, and extended object management information for managing the extension information. A controller detects a pattern of synchronizing events for received data records to be written to tape; writes each transaction of data records to the magnetic tape; accumulates the synchronized transactions in a buffer; and subsequently recursively writes the accumulated transactions of data records from the buffer to the magnetic tape in a sequence. A single backhitch may be employed to place the recursively written accumulated data records following the preceding data, maximizing performance and capacity.

Various embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for data processing. For example, some embodiments of the present invention provide noise reduced data processing circuits. Such circuits include a selector circuit, a sample set averaging circuit, and a data detection circuit. The selector circuit provides either a new sample set or an averaged sample set as a sample output based on a select control signal. The sample set averaging circuit receives the new sample set and provides the averaged sample set. The averaged sample set is based upon two or more instances of the new sample set. A reproduction apparatus includes a unit which receives a stream that is transferred from a server, a buffer which stores the received stream, a decoder which executes a decoding process for reading out the received stream from the buffer and decoding the received stream, a clock generator which generates a clock signal which determines a speed of the decoding process, a unit which determines whether the received stream is a real-time stream or a non-real-time stream, and a unit which executes a process for varying a frequency of the clock signal in accordance with a fill level of the buffer if the received stream is the real-time stream, and executes a process for setting the frequency of the clock signal at a fixed value if the received stream is the non-real-time stream.

A digital data file encryption system and method where digital data encrypted to a high level and an encryption key are received and stored in a computer. The stored, encrypted digital data is decrypted on the basis of the encryption key and stored in a buffer of a predetermined size. Output digital data from the buffer is reencrypted to a low level of encryption and downloaded to a digital data playing device or a data storage medium. Therefore, a digital audio or video data file is prevented from being diverted in unencrypted form from a computer communication network when it is transmitted to a personal computer through the computer communication network and, in turn, downloaded to the digital data playing device. Further, the digital data playing device is prevented from rising in cost due to the use of simple encryption for data downloaded to the playing device.

Described are techniques for managing a sequential stream in a data storage system. A front-end component receives a plurality of data operations for a plurality of data portions and determines that the plurality of data portions are associated with a sequential stream. Each of the plurality of data portions of the sequential stream is associated with a sequential stream identifier, and a position indicator uniquely identifying a position of said each data portion in said sequential stream. Each of the plurality of data portions that is prefetched is associated with a remaining prefetched identifier and included in a prefetched chunk of data portions. The front-end component uses information about said sequential stream in connection with managing said sequential stream. The information includes the sequential stream identifier, one or more position indicators, and one or more remaining prefetched identifiers.

A data-storage apparatus, a data-storage method and a recording/reproducing system are provided, which effectively use the time elapsing before data is transferred to be written in a recording medium, such as disc-seeking time and disc-rotation standby time, thereby to raise the speed of transferring data. A hybrid storage apparatus has two storage areas, i.e., a disc and a nonvolatile solid-state memory. The disc and the memory have a disc cache area, a system area, and a user area each. If data is transferred from the host apparatus, it is written into the cache area of the nonvolatile solid-state memory that can be accessed at high speed for the first super cluster. While the data being so written, the head is moved to a prescribed position. Any data coming after the head is moved to this position is written into the cache area.

When a buffer underrun decision circuit decides that a buffer underrun is about to occur, data recording on the disk is interrupted by a recording control circuit. On the other hand, when the buffer underrun decision circuit determines that a buffer underrun situation has been avoided, data recording is resumed by the recording control circuit. At this time, data recording is resumed from a position of the disk which is continuous to data recorded by the time the data recording was interrupted, thereby recording new data continuous to the last recorded data.

A method and apparatus are provided for implementing enhanced data channel performance using a read sample buffer in a direct access storage device (DASD). Disk data is read and stored in the read sample buffer. When a data recovery procedure (DRP) starts, the stored disk read data in the read sample buffer is detected. Error correction code (ECC) checking of the detected sample buffer disk data is performed to identify correctly recovered data. Using the disk read data stored in the read sample buffer enables data recovery without identification of a sync word. Also using the disk read data stored in the read sample buffer enables data recovery with changed channel data detection settings to recover the data. The read sample buffer can be used for accumulating read disk data from more than one read operation so that at least some channel noise is averaged out.

According to the type of each of a plurality of external input interfaces, it is decided whether digital watermark information is to be detected from data entered via the external input interface. Digital watermark information is not detected from data entered via the external input interface and from which it has been decided not to detect any digital watermark information, but the data is recorded. Thus, there can be provided a data recording apparatus which is not applied with a any heavy load owing to the omission of any unnecessary detection of digital watermark information.
