Embodiment Construction

[0069] The energy assisted system of the present invention may be applied in connection with a variety of medical devices and / or procedures. However, the system of the present invention is primarily described herein in connection with a representative embodiment of an energy-assisted "needle." For example figure 1 , illustrates a block diagram of an energy-assisted needle system of the present invention for illustrating the general function of various embodiments of the energy-assisted needle system of the present invention. As used herein, the term "needle" refers to a relatively elongated device that can be used for penetration, including devices having a channel or passageway for the parenteral introduction of material into or removal of material from the body. In common language, needles tend to be sharp or rigid while catheters are non-piercing and generally soft and pliable. With energy assist, the distinction is blurred because soft materials, such as those used for ...

Abstract

A device for penetrating tissue and removing a biological sample includes a biological sampling element for removing the biological sample. The biological sampling element includes a channel therethrough. The device further comprises a penetrator (101) placed within the channel. The penetrator (101) is energized in a repetitive manner to assist in penetrating tissue. The biological sampling element may be adapted to remove a tissue sample or a biological fluid sample (eg blood). A device for penetrating tissue and positioning a tissue-dwelling conduit (e.g., catheter (400)), comprising a tissue-dwelling conduit (e.g., catheter (400)) comprising a channel therein; and a penetrator operatively associated with Conduit (400) is connected. An apparatus for inserting a tissue-dwelling tract includes at least one component energized during penetration to assist in penetrating tissue.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 552,660, filed March 11, 2004, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to energy assisted devices, systems and methods, and more particularly to energy assisted medical needles, to medical needle systems and methods of energy assisted insertion of needles into tissue. Background technique [0004] A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a piece of tissue is taken from a patient for a pathologist to make or establish a diagnosis with high confidence. The reliability of the diagnosis depends on obtaining a sample of suspicious tissue of sufficient quality to make a diagnosis. [0005] There are three types of biopsies, including surgical biopsy, endoscopic biopsy, and needle biopsy. In order to cause as little pain and distress to the patient as p...
