Embodiment Construction

[0026] The invention includes an overlay network as well as network elements such as distributed databases and mechanisms for operating the network. The overlay network topology is a ring, which is very similar to the known prior art peer-to-peer network Chord. Some new advantageous mechanisms for message routing, data accountability, and data backup are introduced.

[0027] The overlay network consists of any number of nodes without essentially requiring the use of a central control unit that limits scalability and increases OPEX (except for some bootstrap support). Each node has a unique identifier, and links are created to nodes with subsequent higher identifiers. The described mechanism results in a ring topology where neighboring nodes act as predecessors (P) or successors (S) of a node (I).

[0028] FIG. 1 shows a part of a ring comprising nodes 900 , 1200 , 1300 , 1500 , 1900 , 2200 . Each node is responsible for the key / value pairs that must be stored in the distrib...

Abstract

The invention concerns a method for retrieving content of a distributed directory of a telecommunication system comprising a plurality of nodes (900,..., 2200) arranged in a directed ring topology, the method comprising the steps of identifying a storage location of said content by means of a distributed hashing function, where the hashing function maps an element onto a node, where the node (1300) is responsible carrying elements with a hash value between the node and its successor node. The invention further concerns a corresponding computer software product, telecommunication device, and a telecommunication system.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method, a computer software product, a telecommunication device and a telecommunication system for retrieving the contents of a distributed directory. Background technique [0002] Communication systems with low operational expenditure (OPEX) with minimal centralized infrastructure, typically using highly distributed databases in overlay networks (e.g. peer-to-peer networks). They implement self-organizing mechanisms to create robust topologies and ensure the consistency of stored data. The growing use of load balancing, backup strategies, and intelligent routing of database queries and service calls affects the overall efficiency of those networks. [0003] I. Stoica, R. Morris, D. Liben-Nowell, D. Karger, M.F. Kaashoek, F. Dabek and H. Balakrishnan in IEEE / ACM Network Transactions Vol. 11 No. 1 (February 2003) pp. 17-32 A solution is described in "CHORD: A Scalable Peer-to-peer Lookup Protocol for Internet Applications" o...
