Problems solved by technology

[0010] A disadvantage of the processes described in EP-A-1548088 and EP-A-1550709 is that a solvent dewaxing step is performed, so the process is considered complex and involves the use of additional chemicals such as ketones and aromatic type solvents

Embodiment Construction

[0013] The temperature of the cooling surface in step (a) is preferably between the cloud point and the pour point of the base oil feedstock. The surface can be cooled by various methods. The surface is suitably cooled by contacting the opposite side of the surface, ie the side opposite the side in contact with the base oil, with a suitable cooling medium. Examples of suitable cooling media are volatile liquids such as volatile ammonia or nitrogen. Nitrogen may be advantageous in situations where liquid nitrogen is available at low cost and where the nitrogen does not need to be reliquefied. Other examples are quench water or other process streams available with the required temperature and cooling capacity.

[0014] The design of the surface is not critical. It can be flat, corrugated or tubular. The design should be such that the surface can be cooled to the desired temperature for an extended period of time at least sufficient to achieve solidification and deposition of...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of reducing the cloud point of a base oil feedstock having a kinematic viscosity greater than 10 cSt at 100° C. by separating the molecules responsible for the high cloud point from the base oil by: (a) depositing the said molecules, (b) obtaining a base oil with a reduced cloud point, and (c) fusing the deposited molecules and detaching the molten molecules from said surface and reusing said surface to carry out step (a).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of lowering the cloud point of base oil stocks having kinematic viscosities greater than 10 cSt at 100°C. Background technique [0002] WO-A-02070627 describes a process for the preparation of a base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100°C of 22.9 cSt, a pour point of +9°C and a viscosity index of 178. The process involves hydroisomerization of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products with boiling ranges from C5 up to 750°C. The distillation residue boiling above 370° C. is separated from the hydroisomerized effluent and catalytically dewaxed. The dewaxed oil is distilled to obtain the above-mentioned base oil as a distillation residue having a boiling point greater than 510°C. [0003] WO-A-2004007647 describes a process for the preparation of heavy base oils from Fischer-Tropsch derived waxes. The process involves hydroisomerization of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products with boiling ranges from C5 up to 750°C....
