Embodiment Construction

[0018] Referring to FIG. 1 , a city street 10 has a curb 12 and a plurality of marked parking spaces 14 each having an underground vehicle sensor 16 and each marked with a unique identifier such as a number or letter. An example of such a subsurface sensor is the GROUND-HOG manufactured by Nu-metrics TM , which is a wireless, self-contained underground traffic monitor that emits a wireless signal when a vehicle is detected. Associated with each parking space 14 is a post unit 18 or payment unit 20, further details of which are shown in Figure 2 and described below.

[0019] The payment unit 20 has the functionality of a parking meter as described in International Application PCT / CA99 / 00896. In its head 22, mounted on a post 24, it includes a microcontroller, a timer coupled to and controlled by the microcontroller, and a payment acceptance mechanism coupled to the microcontroller. The payment acceptance mechanism may be configured to accept payment for use of the associated ...

Abstract

A parking meter system where a vehicle detector is coupled with a microcontroller for detecting the presence or absence of a vehicle in the associated parking space has a plurality of monitoring units communicating with a single unit for accepting payment by coin, credit card or both. In this way the cost of installing and main- taining the system is reduced.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to co-pending US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 711,690, filed August 29, 2005, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a pay parking system, and more particularly, to a parking system utilizing a device for detecting the presence or absence of a vehicle. Background technique [0004] Existing parking meters are known to increase revenue by detecting the presence or absence of vehicles. US Patent No. 4,823,928 issued to POM Incorporated in 1989 describes an electronic parking meter system that resets the timing circuit to zero when a vehicle can no longer be detected in the associated parking space. POM Incorporated's parking meters were placed in run mode when coins were deposited. When placed in run mode, the sonar dynamometer is switched on, which detects the presence or absence of the vehic...
