The present invention relates to a smart vehicle identification device that has means to determine the identity of vehicles on city streets and highways. The smart vehicle identification device comprises of 1) an interrogator in the form of a radiofrequency (RF) reader; 2) wireless transceiver, modem and communication ports that serve as communication means; 3) a central processing unit comprising of a processor and memory chip that determines and controls the functioning of the smart vehicle identification device. A multitude of smart vehicle identification devices are placed strategically along highways and city streets; and each smart vehicle identification device communicates with a central control station to form a network. Transponders; comprising of radiofrequency (RF) tags; are mounted on vehicles and contain vehicle identification information. The RF reader of each smart vehicle identification device has means to interrogate the RF tag of vehicles passing through its corresponding interrogation zone on highways and city streets. Vehicle identification information thus obtained is transmitted to the central control station. Suspect vehicle identification information is entered into the computer system at the central control station; which has means to match the entered suspect vehicle identification information with the vehicle identification information obtained from the smart vehicle identification devices in its network; and determine if a suspect vehicle has been identified by a smart vehicle identification device in its network. Law enforcement officials are alerted if a suspect vehicle is identified.

System, apparatus and method for wireless notification

The present invention is a system and method for wireless emergency notification. In embodiments, a Civic Notification Service Centre (CNSC) generates a notification message, the notification message including a location identifier and notification information. The location identifier represents a geographical area such as a postal code, city street, neighborhood, or municipality. The CNSC transmits the notification message to a message switch that translates the location identifier to at least one device identifier such as a CAP code that is allocated to a set of notification devices assigned to the geographical location defined by the location identifier. Alternatively, the device identifier could be directly input within the notification message. After translation, the resulting notification message is transmitted to a set of base stations which subsequently transmit the notification message to a plurality of notification devices. The notification devices programmed with the device identifier within the notification message process the notification information. In some cases, a select set of base stations could be defined to transmit a notification message and therefore a limited wireless coverage area would be used that primarily focuses on the geographical area defined by the location identifier of the message. This notification system allows for the bypassing of the PSTN which ensures that in times of emergency, when the PSTN tends to be over-loaded, the notification message can still be delivered to the appropriate notification devices.

An elevated public transit bus system that increases the passenger capacity and decreases the passenger trip time of a fixed route bus service traveling in traffic on a city street to provide a high capacity rapid transit system. The high capacity buses are suspended above the motor vehicle traffic lanes by a support structure constructed in the lane adjacent to the public sidewalk. The propulsion system of the electrically powered buses run in a box beam from which the transit passenger cabins are suspended. The beams guide the buses along the existing fixed route service that is being upgraded to the carrying capacity of an elevated rail rapid transit system. The bus stops or lift stations of the elevated buses for passenger pick up and drop off is also constructed in the road lane next to the sidewalk. The lift stations house an enclosed movable platform that lifts passengers from sidewalk level to the floor level of the suspended bus. The high capacity rapid bus system makes efficient use of city streets by significantly increasing the capacity of persons per lane per hour use over that of the private vehicle. This public transportation enhancement reduces traffic congestion, energy consumption, and air pollution by making bus service more attractive, and by increasing the capacity of the street to carry more transit users without taking away business dependant road parking spaces or public sidewalk space.
