Problems solved by technology

[0010] Unrelated to such communication uses, there are inherent problems due in part to the fact that when a relatively large number of such devices are used, interference with other such devices or with other devices operating at similar frequencies can An error is caused during the process of receiving the transmitted data or control signal by the utility meter

Embodiment Construction

[0034] As noted in the Summary of the Invention, the current subject matter relates, inter alia, to improved apparatus and methods for transmitting radio frequency (RF) signals related to metering operations, eg, within a utility meter, such as an electricity meter. As a generally non-limiting example, medium-powered RF transmitters operating at 900MHz (megahertz) ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) band frequencies (typically 902MHz to 928MHz) are listed under FCC (Federal Communications Commission ) generates considerable power output at the third, fourth and fifth harmonics in the restricted frequency band. Therefore, specific harmonic filtering is required to keep emission levels below government-mandated limits.

[0035] Traditional designs utilize centralized band-pass and / or low-pass filters for the task of harmonic suppression. Implementation of such filters has been difficult mainly due to the generation of spurious passbands and uncontrolled radiation from the fil...

Abstract

Apparatus and methodology are disclosed for providing effective transmission of data to and / or from an electricity meter by providing embedded radio frequency components. An antenna and stripline or microline filter (10) arrangement are provided as embedded components in association with a transmitter or transceiver portion of the electricity meter's metrology circuitry so as to control out-of-band harmonic radiation and to provide enhanced signal transmission to and / or from the electricity meter. The antenna comprises a third harmonic filter (30) or fourth harmonic filter (40) attached to the stripline connected to the antenna.

Description

[0001] priority statement [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 60 / 604,973, filed August 27, 2004, entitled "EMBEDDEDANTENNA AND FILTER APPARATUS AND METHODOLOGY," which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. technical field [0003] The current subject matter generally relates to improved apparatus and methods for providing radio frequency communication to and from electricity meters. More particularly, the current subject matter relates to combined radio frequency filter and antenna configurations that achieve improved transfer characteristics to and from associated fuel gauges. Background technique [0004] The current subject matter relates to apparatus and methods in the field including the use of embedded assemblies in relation to printed circuit board assemblies to form transmitters or transceivers associated with fuel gauges. [0005] The general purpose of metrology is to monitor physical phenomena to allow re...
