Embodiment Construction
[0032] Before describing the preferred embodiment, the requirements for accurate time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation and signal bandwidth are studied further.
[0033] As previously discussed, if the signal bandwidth is sufficient to resolve every signal in a multipath environment, TOA estimation can be based on the arrival of the first significant signal without being negatively affected by other scattered signals. In the case of an indoor non-line-of-sight environment, the scattered signal delay is typically 1 meter or more (equivalent to about 3 nanoseconds), thus making the required bandwidth for resolving the multipath signal 300MHz or larger (see figure 1 , where an example of TOA pulse measurements using a 3 GHz bandwidth (or approximately 0.3 ns resolution) is shown). It was observed that the arrival time is determined by the first significant signal above the background noise, and that delaying the signal does not affect the measurement in cases where the delay of othe...
