An external transmitter circuit drives an implantable neural stimulator having an implanted coil from a primary coil driven by a power amplifier. For efficient power consumption, the transmitter output circuit (which includes the primary coil driven by the power amplifier inductively coupled with the implanted coil) operates as a tuned resonant circuit. When operating as a tuned resonant circuit, it is difficult to modulate the carrier signal with data having sharp rise and fall times without using a high power modulation amplifier. Sharp rise and fall times are needed in order to ensure reliable data transmission. To overcome this difficulty, the present invention includes an output switch that selectively inserts a resistor in the transmitter output coil circuit in order to de-tune the resonant circuit only during those times when data modulation is needed. Such de-tuning allows sharp rise and fall times in the data modulation without the need for using a high power modulation amplifier. Because data modulation is typically needed for only a small percent of the time that a carrier signal is present, it is thus possible using the present invention to achieve reliable data modulation, transmission and reception without having to use a high power modulation amplifier in the transmitter.

Energy-efficient, laser-based method and system for processing target material

An energy-efficient method and system for processing target material such as microstructures in a microscopic region without causing undesirable changes in electrical and/or physical characteristics of material surrounding the target material is provided. The system includes a controller for generating a processing control signal and a signal generator for generating a modulated drive waveform based on the processing control signal. The waveform has a sub-nanosecond rise time. The system also includes a gain-switched, pulsed semiconductor seed laser for generating a laser pulse train at a repetition rate. The drive waveform pumps the laser so that each pulse of the pulse train has a predetermined shape. Further, the system includes a laser amplifier for optically amplifying the pulse train to obtain an amplified pulse train without significantly changing the predetermined shape of the pulses. The amplified pulses have little distortion and have substantially the same relative temporal power distribution as the original pulse train from the laser. Each of the amplified pulses has a substantially square temporal power density distribution, a sharp rise time, a pulse duration and a fall time. The system further includes a beam delivery and focusing subsystem for delivering and focusing at least a portion of the amplified pulse train onto the target material. The rise time (less than about 1 ns) is fast enough to efficiently couple laser energy to the target material, the pulse duration (typically 2-10 ns) is sufficient to process the target material, and the fall time (a few ns) is rapid enough to prevent the undesirable changes to the material surrounding the target material.

A solar cell may be used to reduce the circuit's power consumption by powering various circuit components only when the welding helmet is exposed to light. The invention relates to a preparation method for a novel hafnium-silicon-tantalum-oxygen-nitrogen (HfSiTaON) high-dielectric-constant gate dielectric. According to the preparation method, Ta is introduced to the gate dielectric, so that a gate dielectric material with a relatively high dielectric constant can be obtained; the problems of sharp rise of electric leakage and heavily increased power consumption of the gate dielectric caused by decreasing of the thickness of the gate dielectric of small-sized devices are solved; and the prepared gate dielectric has a higher metal gate work function adjustment capability.
