The invention relates to a driver assistance system for a motor vehicle (10), comprising at least one driving data sensor (20) for sensing driving data that characterizes the driving condition of the motor vehicle (10), and an electrical controller (26) which is designed to initiate autonomous emergency braking of the motor vehicle (10) when predetermined driving data has been sensed. According to the invention, a device is provided which is designed to detect a preceding vehicle (22) located in front of the motor vehicle (10) in the direction of travel of the motor vehicle (10). The electrical controller (26) is designed to maintain a brake of the motor vehicle (10) in a braking position or bring the brake into the braking position following an emergency braking action when the device detecting a preceding vehicle detects the preceding vehicle (22).
