A method for triggering self-braking in a motor vehicle (1), in which following a first collision during an accident a self-braking request signal (13) is transmitted to a brake controller (ESC) by a collision sensor unit (7) by a communications device (6) of the motor vehicle (1). The multi-collision braking requested should be initiated in the event of damage to the brake controller (ESC) that is caused by the first collision. The request signal (13) is received by a control device of the motor vehicle (1) that is disposed at a distance from the brake controller (ESC). The control device (9) then determines whether the brake controller (ESC) responds to the request signal (13). If no response of the brake controller (ESC) is detected, the self-braking is initiated by the control device (9).
