Problems solved by technology

Although commercially developed deactivation targets have been met, construction and operational difficulties have been noted, particularly insufficient refractory life, as well as fluctuations in gas-phase flow rates associated with vaporization of organic matter from each incoming waste-containing bag. resulting in the often imperfect fittings of the method
It has also been found that the residence time of the waste to be processed in these thermal plasma stations is often very long

Embodiment Construction

[0076] [76] figure 1 A partial cross-sectional view of a plasma melting deactivation device according to a particular embodiment of the present invention is shown. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical melting chamber or furnace 1 . However, the melting chamber can also have any other shape, for example oval.

[0077] [77] The melting chamber 1 is continuously supplied upstream via the injection element 2 with a stream of asbestos-containing comminuted solids. The pulverized charge 5 to be processed can be injected into the melting chamber 1 by an inlet 3 formed by a circular cross-section opening provided in an inlet positioned in a side wall 4 of the melting chamber 1 .

[0078] [78] The control flow (flux )'s ability to choose to inject part 2. For example, a cooling screw 2 can be used. Injection via pushrod or pressure pneumatic delivery is also available as an option.

Abstract

The method relates to a method and a device for inerting toxic materials by plasma melting, comprising a melting chamber (1) having an internal volume bounded by walls. According to the invention, this device comprises at least one non-transferred arc plasma source (8, 9) designed to generate a plasma jet that is inclined towards the lower part of the melting chamber (1), by propagating along a propagation axis (17, 18) lying out of the vertical plane (P) containing the normal to the wall at the point of intersection (20) between said propagation axis (17, 18) and said wall (4), so as to stirthe melt bath (6). The melting chamber (1) is in fluid communication with the upstream part of a refining and casting chamber (26). The latter includes, in its downstream part, a port to which a non-transfered arc plasma source (30) is connected, this source (30) being mounted so as to emit a plasma jet (31) in order to strike the refining bath (27) directly in said upstream part so as to repel the unmelted elements in the melt bath (6).

Description

technical field [0001] [01] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for deactivating toxic products, particularly waste materials including asbestos, by plasma melting. Background technique [0002] [02] The nature of asbestos-containing waste, especially from building demolition, is known to be mixed. In particular, these waste materials may also include mineral, metallic, plastic or other combustible substances as well as varying amounts of water. [0003] [03] Many attempts have been made to deactivate asbestos-containing materials or materials containing asbestos. [0004] [04] In these attempts, it was possible to citer stabilization before discharge by diluting asbestos fibers and asbestos dust in a large volume of hydraulic binder and then drying the mass thus obtained. However, this deactivation method raises questions regarding the long-term stability of the material obtained, which is uncertain. [0005] [05] Also known from the patents EP 0 484...
