[0043] The presently described embodiments relate to systems and methods for performing helical mixing and helical separation procedures. Spiral mixers include means for the well-controlled continuous dosing of flocculants (and other known chemicals used in water treatment) into a source water stream just prior to the spiral device. The relatively narrow confines of the helical channels combined with the turbulent flow conditions allow for a very rapid distribution of the added chemicals, thus providing an environment for the nucleation of very uniform primary aggregates. Further aggregation of these primary aggregates within the channel is restricted to dense and compact aggregates due to the (controlled) high shear rate within the confined space of the channel.
