[0054] Rheological analysis

[0055] One exemplary method of comparing the menses immobilizing effectiveness of modified guar gums can be accomplished by rheological analysis, as shown below.

[0056] Sample preparation: A 5% w / w aqueous solution of cationic modified guar gum was prepared as follows: 0.5 g cationic guar gum powder was weighed into a 12 x 12 cm Petri dish. Then 4.50 g of distilled water were added and the mixture was stirred until a homogeneous gel was obtained in the Petri dish.

[0057] After gelling, the dishes were placed in a ventilated oven set at 45°C for 8 hours until completely dry.

[0058] After drying in the Petri dish, a layer of dried cationically modified guar gum powder will appear. The dishes were removed from the oven and left to equilibrate at room temperature for 1 hour.

[0059] 4.50 g of AMF (Artificial Menstrual Fluid, described below) was slowly added to the dry cationic polymer layer, wetting the entire surface. After addition, the...

Abstract

The invention discloses absorbent products for feminine protection, for example sanitary pads, pantiliners or tampons, comprising a cationic modified guar gum. The guar gum is modified by a cationizing agent comprising an ammonium group, wherein the degree of substitution of the cationizing agent is from about 0.070 to less than 0.30. In one aspect of the invention, the cationic modified guar gum is substantially water soluble.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to absorbent products for feminine protection, such as menstrual pads, pantiliners or tampons, comprising cationically modified guar gum. Background of the invention [0002] Most commercially available disposable absorbent products such as sanitary napkins and diapers contain superabsorbent synthetic polymers (SAPs), usually polyacrylates, to deliver body fluid absorption and retention properties. While such synthetic absorbent materials exhibit excellent absorbent capacity for deionized water, their absorbent capacity for electrolyte / salt containing solutions such as menses is relatively low. It is believed that the presence of electrolytes, proteins and cells (mainly erythrocytes in menstrual fluid) influences the swelling process of absorbent gelling materials (see P.K. Chatterjee, B.S. Gupta, "Absorbent Technology" Elsevier 2002, pp. 455-457). [0003] While superabsorbent synthetic polymers have been found to wor...
