Embodiment Construction

[0023] as in figure 1 As shown in , in the mid-range of engine speeds, there is a noticeable, measurable difference in turbocharger speed depending on the high or low cetane fuel used. Filled circles indicate measurements for diesel fuel with a cetane number (CN) of 53, while filled squares indicate measurements for diesel fuel with a CN number of 42. show on figure 1 The four pairs of curves in , each representing a given engine speed, indicate the speed of the turbocharger as measured by the turbocharger speed sensor for a range of injection start delays.

[0024] exist figure 1 Among them, curves 1 and 1' both represent an engine speed of 1000 rpm (revolutions per minute), while curves 4 and 4' both represent an engine speed of 3000 rpm. as in figure 1 As can be seen in , there is no significant change in the turbocharger speed dependent CN value at those engine speeds.

[0025] Curves 2 and 2' both refer to an engine speed of 1500 rpm, while curves 3 and 3' both refer...

Abstract

A method for detecting the cetane number of the fuel used by a direct-injection diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger comprises the steps of operating the diesel engine with at least two different delays of the start of injection with respect to a nominal start of injection, measuring the turbocharger speed depending on the delay, and determining the cetane number from the variation of the turbocharger speed with the delay. The invention also concerns a device for detecting the cetane number of the fuel used by a direct-injection diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and a device for detecting the cetane number of a fuel used in a direct injection diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger. Background technique [0002] The cetane number is a measure of the quality of diesel fuel combustion, particularly ignition delay, which is the period of time between the start of injection and the start of fuel combustion. Therefore, the cetane number needs to be considered in the engine control system in order to determine the optimum fuel injection timing and quantity as well as the optimum exhaust gas recirculation parameters. Failure to do so will result in increased noise and exhaust emissions. [0003] However, in many regions of the world, the cetane number (CN) of diesel fuel varies with the supplier, quality of supply, or the specific state where the fuel is supplied. For example in North America the cetane number varies between 40-55 in different states. Therefore, the var...
