An exhaust gas purification system (100) including an exhaust gas passageway (128) which routes a flow of exhaust gas from an exhaust gas source (110) to an intake manifold (120); an exhaust gas passageway valve (172) controlling flow to intake manifold (120); a cooling system (180) coupled with exhaust gas passageway (128) positioned upstream of exhaust gas source (110) and downstream of intake manifold (120) and operable to transfer heat from the exhaust gas to a coolant in cooling system (180); a bypass passageway (186) coupled with exhaust gas passageway (128) and bypassing cooling system (180); a bypass valve (184) controlling flow through bypass passageway (186); at least one valve operation sensor (192); and a controller (150) controlling bypass valve (184) to direct the flow of exhaust gas to bypass passageway (186) during exhaust gas recirculation based on a signal (194) from valve operation sensor (192).
