Embodiment

[0070] Reduces oxidative stress. In an embodiment, hydrogen (H 2 ) are processed in a shearing device as described herein to reduce the level of oxidative stress in the patient. Without wishing to be bound by theory, when the resulting dispersion (or therapeutic fluid) is introduced into a patient, the hydrogen nanobubbles contained therein reduce the amount of ROS and restore the necessary redox balance in the patient. Thus, cellular damage due to oxidative stress is reduced and various conditions associated with oxidative stress (eg aging, stroke) are alleviated. The level of therapeutic gas in the dispersion (or liquid carrier) depends on the rate of injection into the body as well as the threshold level above which the gas concentration may cease to be therapeutic and may become toxic. Accordingly, the concentration of gas is determined by the level at which the desired therapeutic effect is observed.

Abstract

In this disclosure, a method is described wherein the method comprises mixing a therapeutic gas or a therapeutic liquid or a combination thereof and a liquid carrier in a high shear device to produce a dispersion; and administering the produced dispersion intravenously to a patient; wherein the produced dispersion contains nanobubbles of the therapeutic gas or droplets of the therapeutic liquid with a mean diameter of less than about 1.5 [mu]m. In this disclosure, a system is also described wherein the system comprises a therapeutic gas source or a therapeutic liquid source or a combination thereof; a liquid carrier source; a high shear device (HSD) having an inlet, an outlet, at least one rotor, and at least one stator separated by a shear gap; and a pump configured to control the flow rate and residence time of a fluid passing through the high shear device.

Description

technical field [0001] In general, the present invention relates to the treatment of various diseases. More specifically, the present invention relates to the use of shearing devices to treat various diseases. Background technique [0002] Heart disease, or cardiovascular disease, is a group of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels (arteries and veins), and is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. The population is facing high and increasing rates of cardiovascular disease in most countries of the world. The No. 2 cause of death in the United States, cancer (i.e., malignancy) is a group of cells in which cells exhibit uncontrolled growth (dividing beyond normal limits), invasion (invasion and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (through lymphatic or blood spread to other places in the body). Cancer affects people of all ages, and the risk of most types increases with age. In 2007, cancer-related deaths (7.6 million) accounted fo...
