Problems solved by technology

Therefore, in addition to the aforementioned disadvantages, the traditional anode preparation process is more expensive due to the more manufacturing time and materials involved in joining the lead and copper
[0009] Consequently, companies must expend expensive resources on safety, worker training, quality control testing and manufacturing because the traditional lead soldering technique used to prepare anodes is fraught with problems
So far, traditional lead soldering technology has not been sufficient to solve these problems in the anode industry

Embodiment

[0028] Figure 7is a graph providing process parameters and loads for friction stir welding with good visual appearance according to exemplary embodiments of the present invention. Tests were performed on 11mm (0.43in) thick lead plates to determine the process load and main machine tooling requirements in manufacturing friction stir welding operations. Process loads of interest include normal loads (z-loads), in-plane loads (x,y) and spindle torque. The lead plates used included a quantity of 10 4" wide plates and 4 6" wide plates.

[0029] The fixturing used to weld the lead plates is not special, but uses simple finger presses on an anvil. Faying surfaces and adjacent areas should be degreased with a solvent wipe immediately prior to welding. A total of 17 welds were performed. Of the 17 welds, 12 were prepared using the bead on plate configuration and the remainder were prepared using the butt-butt configuration to examine process loads in either configuration. Based ...

Abstract

An electrochemical anode is formed using friction stir welded (FSW) joints. A FSW joint may be formed between the bus bar and anode sheet or the lead encapsulation and anode sheet. The FSW joints may also comprise fillet and butt joints. FSW joints may also be utilized to seal the ends of the electrochemical anodes to prevent corrosion.

Description

[0001] inventor [0002] T.W. Ellis, M. Bull, E. Jones technical field [0003] In general, the present invention relates to electrochemical processes, particularly lead anodes for use in the mining industry, and more particularly to methods of making such anodes using friction stir welding. Background technique [0004] According to traditional practice, the joints in lead anodes used in the mining industry are formed using traditional lead welding methods such as torch welding, in which lead is melted by hand to form the weld or joint. However, there are a series of disadvantages that accompany the traditional lead soldering method, which will be discussed below. [0005] Traditional lead soldering methods pose a high degree of danger to workers. First, the heat generated in the process of creating the weld can lead to injury to workers. Second, lead levels in the surrounding environment can rise to toxic levels during lead melting. If inhaled, it can lead to lead pois...
