Embodiment Construction

[0037] figure 1 A multi-aperture imaging system 100 is shown in accordance with one embodiment of the invention. The imaging system may be a digital camera or part integrated in a mobile phone, webcam, biometric sensor, image scanner or any other multimedia device requiring image capture functionality. figure 1 The system depicted in includes an image sensor 102, a lens system 104 for focusing objects in the scene onto the imaging plane of the image sensor, a shutter 106, and an aperture system 108 comprising a predetermined number of apertures that allow light (electromagnetic radiation) A first part of the EM spectrum, such as the visible part, and at least a second part of the EM spectrum, such as the invisible part, such as the infrared part of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum, enter the imaging system in a controlled manner.

[0038] The multi-aperture system 108, discussed in more detail below, is configured to control the exposure of the image sensor to light in the v...

Abstract

Processing multi-aperture image data. A method and a system for processing multi-aperture image data is described wherein the method comprises: capturing image data associated of one or more objects by simultaneously exposing an image sensor in an imaging system to spectral energy associated with at least a first part of the electromagnetic spectrum using at least a first aperture and to spectral energy associated with at least a second part of the electromagnetic spectrum using at least a second aperture; generating first image data associated with said first part of the electromagnetic spectrum and second image data associated with said second part of the electromagnetic spectrum; and, generating depth information associated with said captured image on the basis of first sharpness information in at least one area of said first image data and second sharpness information in at least one area of said second image data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to processing multi-aperture image data and in particular, but not exclusively, to methods and systems for processing multi-aperture image data, image processing apparatus for use in such systems, and computer program products using such methods . Background technique [0002] The increasing use of digital picture and video imaging in a variety of technical fields, such as mobile telecommunications, automotive, and biometrics, calls for the development of small integrated cameras that provide image quality comparable to that offered by single-lens reflex cameras. The image quality matches or at least is similar. However, integrated and miniaturized digital camera technology imposes severe constraints on the design of the optical system and image sensor, thereby negatively affecting the image quality produced by the imaging system. Wide mechanical focus and aperture setting mechanisms are not suitable for this integrated ...
