Abstract

A joint prosthesis system (10) is suitable for cemented fixation. The system has two metal implant components (12, 14) and a bearing (16). One of the metal implant components has an articulation surface (18, 20) for articulation with the bearing. The other metal implant component has a mounting surface (26) for supporting the bearing. One of the metal implant components includes a solid metal portion (80, 80A) and a porous metal portion (82, 82A). The porous metal portion has surfaces with different characteristics, such as roughness, to improve bone fixation, ease removal of the implant component in a revision surgery, reduce soft tissue irritation, improve the strength of a sintered bond between the solid and porous metal portions, or reduce or eliminate the possibility of blood traveling through the porous metal portion into the joint space. A method of making the joint prosthesis is also disclosed. The invention may also be applied to discrete porous metal implant components, such as augment.

Description

[0001] Related Patent Applications [0002] This patent application is a continuation-in-part of the following U.S. patent application, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety: U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 12 / 470,397 (Attorney Docket No. DEP6089USNP), which claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 256,468, filed October 30, 2009, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to implantable orthopedic prostheses, and more particularly to implantable prostheses having bearing assemblies and other assemblies supporting the bearing assemblies. Background technique [0004] During the patient's lifetime, joint replacement surgery may be required on the patient due to reasons such as disease or trauma. Joint replacement surgery may involve the use of one or more internal prostheses implanted in the patient's bones. In knee replacement surg...
