Abstract

In an internal combustion engine, a hydrocarbon feed valve (16), an exhaust purification catalyst (13), a particulate filter (14), and an NO2 reduction catalyst (15) are arranged in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine. When the internal combustion engine is running, the injection amount of hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon feed valve (16) is controlled so that the amplitude of the change in the concentration of hydrocarbons flowing into the exhaust purification catalyst (13) falls within a predetermined range. When reducing NO2 produced in the particulate filter (14) to NO, the injection amount of hydrocarbons is increased, thereby increasing the passing amount of hydrocarbons passing through the exhaust purification catalyst (13).
