Embodiment Construction

[0020] In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a quality assurance system and workflow is presented that can be employed to determine spatial accuracy and correction in navigation-assisted brachytherapy, and in particular prostate brachytherapy any inaccuracies in . Prostate brachytherapy is one of the most common treatment modalities for prostate cancer, but suffers from limited image guidance, which can lead to side effects in patients and can lead to user-dependent clinical outcomes. Navigation-assisted brachytherapy improves the accuracy and clinical benefit of brachytherapy. However, since this approach is clinically acceptable, the functionality and accuracy of the navigator needs to be verified at regular intervals in easily performed QA (Quality Assurance) experiments.

[0021] Electromagnetic tracking (EM tracking) is an example of one navigation approach, but other navigation approaches are contemplated. Regardless of the navigational approach t...

Abstract

A calibration system includes a channel block(102)having a plurality of channels (104) formed therein. The channels are configured to correspond to locations where treatment devices are inserted for treatment of a patient. The channels are dimensioned to restrict motion of the treatment devices. A tracking system (128) is configured to monitor a position of a treatment device(108)inserted in one or more of the channels. The tracking system is configured to generate tracking data for the at least one treatment device for comparison with an expected position for the treatment device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to medical devices, and more particularly to systems and methods for accurate verification and correction of navigation assisted therapy. Background technique [0002] Brachytherapy, including low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy and high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, is one of the most common treatment modalities for prostate cancer. In LDR brachytherapy, a radioactive seed source is permanently implanted into the prostate using a transperineal needle through a grid template guided by transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) image guidance into the prostate. In HDR brachytherapy, a catheter is temporarily implanted into the prostate using TRUS guidance through the perineum, followed by computer-controlled temporary insertion of a high-dose-rate radioactive source into the catheter. [0003] As with other medical devices used for therapeutic purposes, brachytherapy devices need to be regularly tested during the Quality Assurance (QA)...
