Problems solved by technology

To cover this large amount of residual oil requires the application of large amounts of surfactant which makes the surfactant flooding process expensive
Further, when a large amount of surfactant is added to the displacement water, breakthrough may occur, causing emulsification problems of the product oil

Embodiment Construction

[0015] figure 1 A schematic diagram of a system for implementing a method according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. System 10 includes injection well 100 and production well 101 . Oil 102 is stored in an oil-bearing formation 105 . Oil-bearing formation 105 may be any type of geological formation and may lie beneath overburden 104 . Although figure 1 The formation 105 is shown as being onshore, but it should be understood that the formation 105 may be onshore or offshore. According to the previously mentioned new theory, oil 102 exists in formation 105 mainly as lines 102-1 to 102-n. The wires are of various lengths and may extend from injection well 100 to production well 101 as shown. Furthermore, the wires are actually three-dimensional and can be cross-connected to other wires throughout 105 . See E. Sunde, B.-L. T. Torsvik, SPE 154138, Towards a New Theory for Improved Oil Recovery from Sandstone Reservoirs, the disclosure of which is incorporated by r...

Abstract

A method of recovering oil from a formation that includes the use of surfactants at low concentrations. The surfactant may be an oleophilic surfactant. The method may include conditioning an oil recovery system to inhibit microbes that could consume the oleophilic surfactant. A method that determines the concentration of a surfactant that is sufficient to change the interfacial tension between oil and water in a near well bore area of an injection well in a formation but does not require changing the interfacial tension between oil and water outside the near well bore area.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims co-pending U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 614,882, filed March 23, 2012, entitled "ULTRA LOW CONCENTRATION SURFACTANT FLOODING" and filed March 14, 2013, entitled "ULTRA LOW CONCENTRATION SURFACTANT FLOODING", the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] Crude oil is still an important energy source. Crude oil producers typically produce oil by drilling wells into underground oil reservoirs in the formation. For some wells, the natural pressure of the oil is sufficient to draw the oil to the surface. This is called primary oil recovery. Over time, as the wells are drilled through primary oil recovery, the natural pressure drops and becomes insufficient to bring the oil to the surface. When this happens, significant amounts of crude oil may remain in the formation. Therefore, various secondary and tertiary oil recovery methods can be us...
