The invention utilizes the branch group current transformer configured by the main protection to extract a specific harmonic component from each phase current, calculate its total effective value as the fault characteristic quantity, and obtain the harmonic component which is approximately proportional to the excitation current under normal operating conditions of the motor. The inherent fractional harmonic components of the branch current constitute the monitoring alarm value. When the fault characteristic value is greater than the monitoring alarm value, a fault alarm signal for the inter-turn short circuit fault of the excitation winding is issued.
