Embodiment Construction

[0032] refer to figure 1 , which describes a typical air path for an internal combustion engine 10 of a vehicle. One or more sensors 12 may be provided in the airflow path. For example, a mass air flow sensor 12a and / or an air temperature sensor 12b may be provided in the airflow path. Air may pass through compressor 14a of turbocharger 14 . Turbocharger 14 may increase engine power output and reduce emissions. Typically, the turbocharger 14 is arranged with an exhaust-driven turbine 14b driving a compressor 14a mounted on the same shaft. An optional intercooler 16 may be provided downstream of the turbocharger compressor 14 a, for example, to further increase the density of the air entering the internal combustion engine 10 . Air may enter internal combustion engine 10 via throttle 18 , which is configured to vary the mass flow of air entering the internal combustion engine. In a particular example of the present invention, internal combustion engine 10 comprises a dies...

Abstract

A method of heating a cabin of a vehicle, the vehicle comprising: an internal combustion engine; a throttle configured to vary the mass flow of air entering the internal combustion engine; and a cabin heating assembly configured to transfer heat from the internal combustion engine to the cabin, wherein the method includes: the first step of determining whether additional cabin heating is required; and adjusting the position of the throttle to reduce the mass flow of ambient air into the internal combustion engine thereby increasing the temperature associated with the internal combustion engine and thereby a second step of increasing the amount of heat transferred to the cabin through the cabin heating assembly. The invention also relates to a system for performing the method.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority from UK Patent Application No. 1315100.6 filed 23 August 2013, the entire content of which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a method and system for heating a passenger compartment, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a method and system for heating a passenger compartment including adjusting the position of a throttle to reduce the mass flow of ambient air into an internal combustion engine. Background technique [0004] Increased combustion efficiency and reduced engine friction in diesel engines to achieve low emissions and improved fuel economy have resulted in reduced heat transfer to the engine coolant. An undesirable effect of this reduction is that less heat is available to warm the cabin at low ambient temperatures. Auxiliary electric heaters are a partial solution, but in the latest gene...
