Embodiment Construction

[0029] The invention relates to a battery discharge device for discharging energy stored in a high voltage power supply of an electrified vehicle. The battery discharge unit is a separate unit from the electrified vehicle and connectable to the electrified vehicle. The battery discharging device may include a sensor to sense a parameter related to the high voltage power supply and a controller to monitor the sensed parameter. Based on the sensed parameters, the controller can command operation of the discharge circuit. The discharge circuit includes a plurality of parallel resistors that can be selectively switched into the circuit to increase the parallel resistance for discharging energy stored in the high voltage power supply. These and other features are discussed in more detail here.

Abstract

A battery discharge device according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a sensor configured to sense a parameter of a high voltage source, a controller in communication with the sensor and a discharge circuit that discharges energy stored on the high voltage source in response to a command signal from the controller. The discharge circuit includes a plurality of resistors connected in parallel to one another.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to electrified vehicles, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a battery discharge device for releasing energy stored in an electrified vehicle high voltage power supply after an abnormal event. Background technique [0002] Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHV), battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell vehicles, and other known electrified vehicles differ from conventional motor vehicles in that they rely on one or more electric motors (i.e. , electric motors and / or generators) to provide power in place of or in addition to internal combustion engines by one or more electric machines (ie, electric motors and / or generators). The high voltage electrical current that powers these types of electric machines is typically supplied by a traction battery system having one or more battery cells that store energy. [0003] One or more battery cells of a traction battery system may be damaged duri...
