The method comprises the following steps: receiving firmware update information broadcast by a gateway through at least one coordinator; sending an update request for requesting update data to the gateway; receiving the update data taking frames as units transmitted by the gateway in response to the update request; updating firmware based on the received update data; and simultaneously transmitting the update data taking the frames as the units to two non-updated coordinators by updated coordinators, and updating all the coordinators at an update speed being an exponential multiple of 2. According to the method and the system, remote update processes is executed in background, so that normal use of current network equipment is not influenced, and the network equipment can process other data normally in the remote update processes.
