The invention discloses a rapid symbol distance function calculating method for horizontal set image segmentation, and the method mainly comprises the steps of obtaining a distance value of most points in an image rapidly through normal radiation method first; and then obtaining a distance of the points that haven't been radiated by a normal by comparing and computing four neighborhood iterations twice. <{EN2}>The method comprises the steps of 1) calculating a symbol value, and an inside and outside of an enclosed curve are obtained by employing area growth method, wherein the inside distance symbol is negative and the outside distance symbol is positive; 2) calculating the normal direction of each point on the enclosed curve, setting an extension step length based on different directions, and obtaining the distance value of most points in the image rapidly by radiating the step length in an extension way along the normal; and 3) comparing and computing distance of the points that haven't been radiated by the normal through four neighborhood iterations twice.
