Abstract

Compositions contain a therapeutically effective amount of p-anisaldehyde for at least one of provoking the swallowing reflex of dysphagic patients, decreasing appetite by delaying gastric emptying, reducing body weight gain, or reducing gylcemia by improving insulin sensitivity, or improving mood, memory or cognition. Methods are provided that include administering such compositions.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to compositions comprising naturally occurring compounds present in some fragrances. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to compositions comprising p-anisaldehyde, and also to methods comprising administering such compositions. [0002] Dysphagia is a condition characterized by a decreased ability to swallow. Normal swallowing involves three distinct phases that are related and coordinated: the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases. During the oral stage under voluntary control, food that is chewed and mixed with saliva forms a bolus that is sent by voluntary tongue movements to the back of the mouth and into the pharynx. The pharyngeal phase is involuntary and is triggered by a food / liquid bolus passing through the palatal arches into the pharynx. The three pharyngeal constrictors contract to push the food bolus toward the upper esophageal sphincter. At the same time, the soft palate bloc...
