Embodiment Construction

[0047] figure 1A variable geometry turbocharger is shown comprising a variable geometry turbine housing 1 and a compressor housing 2 interconnected by a central bearing housing 3 . The turbocharger shaft 4 extends from the turbine housing 1 through the bearing housing 3 to the compressor housing 2 . A turbine wheel 5 is mounted on one end of the shaft 4 to rotate within the turbine housing 1 , and a compressor wheel 6 is mounted on the other end of the shaft 4 to rotate within the compressor housing 2 . The shaft 4 rotates relative to the turbocharger axis on a bearing assembly 24 located in the bearing housing 3 .

[0048] The turbine housing 1 defines an intake volute 7 to which gas from an internal combustion engine (not shown) is delivered, for example via one or more conduits (not shown). Exhaust gas flows from the inlet chamber 7 to the axial outlet channel 8 via the annular inlet channel 9 and the turbine wheel 5 . The inlet channel 9 is delimited on one side by a ra...

Abstract

A method of delivering lubricant to a turbocharger, the method comprising delivering a flow of lubricant to a bearing supporting a shaft of the turbocharger during normal operation of the turbocharger; monitoring the shaft and substantially stopping the flow of lubricant to the bearing upon detection of deceleration of the shaft and upon the speed of the shaft dropping below a threshold.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a turbocharger system having a lubricant control system and to a method of delivering lubricant to a turbocharger. Background technique [0002] A turbocharger is a known device for supplying air at a pressure above atmospheric pressure (boost) to the intake port of an internal combustion engine. A conventional turbocharger essentially consists of an exhaust gas driven turbine wheel mounted on a rotatable shaft within a turbine housing. Rotation of the turbine wheel rotates a compressor wheel mounted on the other end of the shaft within the compressor housing. The compressor wheel delivers compressed air to the engine's intake manifold, increasing the engine's power. The turbocharger shaft is usually supported (including an appropriate lubrication system) by plain and thrust bearings in a central bearing housing connected between the turbine and compressor wheel housings. [0003] The lubrication system is provided w...
