Embodiment Construction

[0024] According to an aspect of the present invention, an optical vital sign sensor based on a photoplethysmographic PPG sensor is provided. This PPG sensor as figure 1 shown. The light source emits light onto or into the user's skin 1000 , and some of the light is reflected, and the reflected light may be detected by the light detector 120 . The output of the light detectors can be analyzed to determine the user's heart rate or other vital signs.

[0025] A PPG sensor or an optical vital sign sensor according to an aspect of the present invention may be implemented as a wrist device such as a smart watch. An optical vital sign sensor according to an aspect of the present invention can also be implemented as a device worn eg behind the user's ear or any other part of the user, as long as it is ensured that the optical vital sign sensor is placed directly on the user's skin.

Abstract

An optical vital signs sensor comprises a light source (110) having alight unit (111, 112) generating light which is directed towards a skin (1000) of a user, at least one photo detector unit (120) having a plurality of photo diodes (121-12n) detecting light from the skin (1000), and an adjusting unit (140, 150) configured to adjust an effective distance which the light travels between the light unit (111, 112) and the photo diode (12-12n).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optical vital sign sensors and methods of operating optical vital sign sensors. Background technique [0002] Optical heart rate sensors are well known for monitoring or detecting vital signs such as a user's heart rate. Such a heart rate sensor can be based on a photoplethysmographic PPG sensor, which can be used to acquire volumetric organ measurements. With pulse oximeters, changes in the light absorption of a person's skin are detected, and based on these measurements, the user's heart rate or other vital signs can be determined. The PPG sensor includes a light source, such as a light emitting diode (LED), that emits light into the user's skin. The emitted light is dispersed in the skin and at least partially absorbed by the blood. A portion of the light leaves the skin and can be captured by photodiodes. The amount of light captured by the photodiode may be an indication of the volume of blood within the user's...
