Embodiment 1

[0073] A finite element model simulation of the strength obtained by using an alternative edge treatment method and the edge treatment method according to the method described herein is carried out to prove that the compression size in the edge cover formed by the method described herein has been improved . As used herein, the term "alternative edge treatment method" refers to a method of processing the edge of a laminated glass product by forming a channel in the core layer of the laminated glass product and heating the edge with a laser beam to make The glass cladding layer on one side of the glass core layer is fused to the glass cladding layer on the opposite surface of the glass core layer, thereby closing the channel and effectively forming an edge cap. However, in this alternative edge treatment method, glass filler materials with a CTE greater than the glass core layer are not used.

[0074] The compressive stress formed in the laminated glass product using the alternati...

Abstract

A method for strengthening an edge of a glass laminate including a glass core layer positioned between a first glass clad layer and a second glass clad layer may include forming a channel in the edge of the glass laminate. Sidewalls of the channel may be formed from the first glass clad layer and the second glass clad layer. Glass filler material having a filler coefficient of thermal expansion greater than a core coefficient of thermal expansion may be positioned in the channel. The glass filler material and the sidewalls of the channel may be fused to the second glass clad layer thereby forming an edge cap over the channel. The edge of the glass laminate is under compressive stress after the glass filler material is enclosed in the channel.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority from U.S. Patent Application No. 62 / 072665 filed on October 30, 2014, the entire content of which is incorporated herein by reference. [0002] background Technical field [0003] This specification generally relates to laminated glass products, and more specifically, to a method for strengthening the edges of laminated glass products and laminated glass products formed by the method. Background technique [0004] Glass products, such as cover glass, glass backplanes, and similar products, are also used in consumer and commercial electronic devices, such as LCD and LED displays, computer monitors, automated teller machines (ATM), and the like. Some of these glass products may include "touch" functions, which necessitate contact with various objects, including the user's fingers and / or stylus device, so that the glass must be strong enough to withstand frequent contact without being damaged. In addition, these glass products can also be incorp...
