Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present invention relates generally to radiotherapy systems and methods of use, and in particular, collimator systems provide selective control and delivery of aligned radiation beams.

[0024] figure 1 A cross-sectional view of the rotating collimator wheel 100 is shown, which has a collimator channel 140 therethrough. The collimator wheel 100 has longitudinally extending channels or collimator channels 105, 115, and 125 defined therein (e.g., processed to pass through the body of the collimator wheel 100). The figure shows a number of other channels, which are not labeled for the sake of clarity of the drawing. The collimator channel can have various sizes, diameters or shapes. In some embodiments, each collimator channel has a different diameter. For example, such as figure 1 As shown in, the collimator channel 105 has a larger bore than the collimator channel 115, and the collimator channel 115 has a larger bore than the collimator channel 125. Each collimator c...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a rotary radiation collimator. Provided herein are devices, systems, and methods that allow the delivery of therapeutic radiation beams of different sizes or shapes during radiotherapy. Such devices may include a rotatable collimator body having a plurality of collimator channels of different sizes or shapes defined therein, the channels extending substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation through a quasi-orthogonal straight body. The collimator body may include indicia thereon to facilitate the detection of the alignment position by the sensor of the control system to allow the collimator body to move quickly and accurately between the aligned positions to promote different treatment beams during the treatment delivery.

Description

[0001] This application claims the right of priority of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 502,472 filed on May 5, 2017, the entire content of which is incorporated herein by reference. Technical field [0002] The present invention relates to the field of radiotherapy, and more specifically to a collimator system and related methods for controlling the size and shape of a radiotherapy beam during radiotherapy. Background technique [0003] The overall goal of the collimator system is to deliver the radiation beam produced by the source (for example, LINAC) to the target (for example, a tumor in the patient's brain). Because although it is desirable to irradiate the tumor, it is usually not desirable to irradiate the surrounding healthy tissue, so the size and shape of each beam is critical. To control the shape of the radiation beam (for example, diameter or 2D cross-sectional area), a collimator is used. The collimator is generally a dense sheet of radiopaque metal that basica...
