Abstract

The present invention relates to a catalyst composition for synthesizing methyl propionate from ethylene, wherein the catalyst composition comprises a ruthenium compound main catalyst, a non-noble metal compound cocatalyst represented by a general formula (I), an organophosphorus compound, a structure aid, optionally an acidic aid and optionally a solvent. The present invention further relates to a method for synthesizing methyl propionate from ethylene, wherein the method comprises that ethylene, methanol and carbon monoxide are subjected to a carbonylation reaction in the presence of the catalyst composition to synthesize the methyl propionate. According to the present invention, the catalyst composition has characteristics of high conversion rate, good selectivity and long service life in the synthesis of methyl propionate from ethylene, has good catalytic activity and good selectivity at the low temperature under the low pressure, can efficiently catalyze the synthesis of methyl propionate through the carbonylation of ethylene and methanol, and has good commercial value, wherein the methyl propionate yield can be up to 95.7% (calculated as the ethylene).
