Embodiment approach

[0046] One aspect of the present disclosure is a method of treating DMVD in companion animals suffering from degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). Another aspect of the present disclosure is a method of preventing DMVD in companion animals at risk of DMVD. Yet another aspect of the present disclosure is a method of maintaining or improving the heart health of a companion animal.

[0047] The method includes orally administering to the dog a composition comprising medium chain triglycerides and any one or more of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, taurine, lysine, or sulfur-containing amino acids. The composition may be pet food, such as moist pet food, semi-moist pet food, or dry pet food, such as kibbles.

[0048] Generally, the medium chain triglycerides can be about 0.5% to about 60% by weight of the composition. In one aspect, the medium chain triglycerides can be from about 1% to about 20% by weight of the composition. In other aspects, the medium chain triglyce...

Embodiment 1

[0065] Example 1-Heart health mixed study on canines with DMVD

[0066] 19 healthy dogs and 21 dogs with heart murmurs were selected for a 6-month study. All dogs were examined by a professionally certified veterinary cardiologist using echocardiography and were confirmed to be healthy or suffering from early degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). The dogs in each group were randomly divided into two diet treatment groups according to age, sex, breed, weight and murmur level. The control diet manufactured by Nestle Purina PetCare Company provides complete and balanced nutrition to meet or exceed the requirements set by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). The test diet contains all the ingredients in the control diet and the following additional ingredients: medium chain triglycerides (MCT) in an amount of 5.000% by weight, omega-3 fatty acids in an amount of 0.7489% by weight, lysine in an amount of 2.3000% by weight, Methionine and cysteine in an ...

Embodiment 2

[0071] Example 2-Heart health mixed study on canines with DMVD

[0072] Seven beagle dogs and one miniature Scherena were selected for the study. All dogs were examined by a professionally certified veterinary cardiologist using echocardiography and were classified as suffering from degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). The dogs were randomly assigned to two diet treatment groups. The control diet manufactured by Nestle Purina PetCare Company provides complete and balanced nutrition to meet or exceed the requirements set by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). The test diet contains the same ingredients as the control diet, except that it additionally contains 7% medium chain triglycerides (MCT). The diet is isocaloric and contains the same amount of nitrogen. The diet is shown in Table 1.

Abstract

A method of treating degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) in a companion animal having DMVD, a method of preventing DMVD in a companion animal at risk thereof, and a method of maintaining or improving cardiac health in a companion animal. The methods include orally administering to the companion animal a composition containing medium chain triglycerides and optionally one or more of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, lysine, taurine, magnesium, or sulfur-containing amino acids.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority of U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 339,436 filed on May 20, 2016, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to food compositions. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to compositions containing medium chain triglycerides and methods that include administering the compositions to companion animals. [0004] The mitral valve is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart, and is formed by thin flaps or leaflets of tissue, which are attached to the muscles of the left ventricle through long tendon-like structures (chondria). The mitral valve helps regulate the flow of blood into and out of the heart and prevents the backflow of blood into the atrium. The valve leaflets open and close to regulate the flow of blood, but when a dog has degenerative...
