Embodiment Construction

[0104] Referring to Figures 1a and 1b, there is illustrated a sensor (10) according to a preferred embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention. The sensor (10) can detect a change (Δ) in the fringe capacitance (A) and includes flanking on either side (16a; 16b) spaced apart (da; db) by two ungrounded conductors (14a; 14b) sensor conductor (12). The three conductors form a triplet (14a-12-14b) and are supported on an ungrounded conductive substrate (18), which is electrically isolated (20) from the conductors (12, 14a, 14b) and their surroundings. Both the sensor conductor and the ungrounded conductor are conductive material (usually copper) and may be in the form of wires or pads which are mounted in electrical isolation on a conductive substrate (18), usually aluminum , which shields the sensor from the surface it is placed on.

[0105] As can be seen from Figures 2a and 2b, the sensor that detects a change in capacitance (Δ) acts as a fringe capacitor that dete...

Abstract

The invention relates to a fringe capacitance sensor (10) for sensing objects, particularly, but not exclusively, pests, a sensor unit (100) comprising one or more fringe capacitance sensors, a systemcomprising a plurality of sensor units in a mesh topology or other wireless network and a method for intelligently detecting object activity, such as the presence of a pest, for example, a rodent orcrawling, burrowing or flying insect. It can also be applied to the management of animals, whether in the wild or on farms. A preferred sensor (10) for detecting changes (delta) in fringe capacitance(A) comprises an electrically conductive sensor conductor (12) and two electrically conductive un-grounded conductors (14a; 14b) disposed one on either side (16a; 16b) of the sensor conductor (12) toform a triplet (14a-12-14b). The conductors (12, 14a, 14b) are supported on an un-grounded conductive substrate (18) which is electrically isolated (20) from said conductors (12, 14a, 14b) and each conductor (14a, 12; 14b) is of a width (w), and thickness (t), and is spaced by a distance (d) from another such that the sensor is tuned to detect or identify a given animal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to fringe capacitive sensors, sensor units comprising one or more fringe capacitive sensors, systems comprising multiple sensor units in a mesh topology or other wireless networks for sensing objects, in particular but not limited to pests , and methods for intelligent detection of object activity such as the presence of pests, for example, rodents or reptiles, burrowing or flying insects. [0002] The invention can also be applied to the management of animals, whether the animals are in the wild or on a farm. Background technique [0003] Sensing or monitoring of objects, especially living objects such as pests, is common. For example, EP283142 discloses a pest monitoring system and teaches the use of sensing devices in response to changes in eg pressure, temperature, odor, sound and / or capacitance. US6937156 discloses a sensor system comprising at least two sensor electrodes and a capacitive sensing circuit. It teache...
