Embodiment Construction

[0014] single channel correction

[0015] Mono speaker system 100 with automatic detection and compensation of speaker system distortion in figure 1 shown in . In this system, an input signal 102 is fed to a frequency band and amplitude detection subsystem, implemented by means of digital time domain to frequency domain conversion or in some embodiments by means of an analog filter bank 104 . In certain embodiments, the digital time domain to frequency domain conversion is performed by a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) unit, a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) unit, or by a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), each of these units Each provides a frequency-domain representation of the input signal. A microphone 106 is placed to observe the sound 107 produced by a loudspeaker 108 and is coupled to another frequency band and amplitude detection subsystem, also implemented by means of a digital FFT, DFT or DCT unit or an analog filter bank 110 . Each digital FFT, DFT or DCT unit or fil...

Abstract

A speaker system featuring automatic volume adjustment to avoid excess distortion includes a first converter for converting an input signal to an input frequency domain signal; and a second converterfor converting a microphone signal to an environmental frequency domain signal. A distortion analyzer receives output of the first and second converter and determines at least one distortion level andprovides at least one gain adjustment signal used to control a corrector to adjust gain of a speaker driver. The system performs a method of reducing distortion by automatically adjusting volume in each of a plurality of frequency bands including converting an input signal to a frequency domain input signal; converting a microphone signal to an environmental frequency domain signal; determining adistortion level; generating a gain adjustment signal; and adjusting gain of a signal provided to a speaker driver.

Description

Background technique [0001] Many amplifiers and speaker systems provide reasonably good sound quality reproduction at volumes below the volume distortion threshold, and severely distorted sound at volumes significantly above the volume distortion threshold. [0002] Distortion above the volume distortion threshold can be caused by amplifier clipping or saturation as well as nonlinearities in the speaker itself. For example, while many loudspeakers have a speaker cone suspension system (which acts like a near-linear spring for small cone displacements), at large cone displacements the return force is non-linear, stronger than expected from a linear spring. Other nonlinearities are caused by changes in the inductance of the voice coil as it moves through the speaker's magnetic field, and by changes in the volume of the speaker enclosure as the speaker cone moves. However, more nonlinearities are caused by loose or failing glue, rubbing against speaker parts, dirt, and other age...
