Embodiment Construction

[0019] As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.

[0020] Automotive glass (eg, windshields and rear windows) is typically bonded to the vehicle frame using adhesives. One example of a commonly used adhesive is a moisture cured polyurethane adhesive. The glass can be decorated with enamel frits on the inner perimeter to disguise the appearance of the adhesive bead and to protect the adhesive bond to the glass from UV radiation damage. ...

Abstract

The invention provides a method for bonding injection molded plastics. According to an embodiment, the method of bonding an injection molded plastic to a glass substrate is disclosed. The method includes applying a silica coating to a surface of the glass substrate; injection-molding a plastic substrate, modified with a silane coupling agent, on to the glass substrate to adhere the plastic substrate to the surface; and curing the plastic substrate to covalently bond the silane coupling agent to the silica coating.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to bonding glass substrates to overmolded plastics. Background technique [0002] Encapsulating glass provides protection for electrical components from environmental exposure and provides a frame for automotive applications. Thermoplastics and thermosets can be injection molded onto glass substrates to encapsulate the glass. Robust adhesion of the molded plastic to the glass is necessary to ensure bond integrity and prevent air and water leakage from contaminating insulated electrical components or entering the vehicle compartment. [0003] A method for bonding injection molded plastic to glass to form an encapsulated glass includes adding a primer to the surface of the glass substrate prior to injection molding. The primer aids in the chemical linkage and adhesion between the plastic and the glass surface. Solvent-based primers used to promote adhesion are applied by hand, making the application prone to human error....
