Embodiment Construction

[0012] figure 1 In accordance with the present invention, a device and method are provided which enable automated analysis of discrete liquid samples using wet chemical reagents for detection of analytes. The discrete samples analyzed using the present invention and the reagents used are typically aqueous, although samples / reagents with other polar solvent media may also be used, such as methanol, ethanol, mixtures of water and alcohols, etc. "Aqueous" as used herein means at least 50% by weight water. According to the invention, a small volume of discrete liquid samples is formed in an analysis channel comprising a hydrophobic carrier liquid. The discrete samples formed should be substantially immiscible with the hydrophobic carrier liquid, eg, generally have a solubility of less than about 500 ppm. Discrete samples are then sequentially processed with the appropriate colorimetric, turbidimetric, or fluorescent derivatization reagents through the coordinated operation of pr...

Abstract

The invention discloses an automatic device and a method for analyzing a liquid sample by forming a discrete sample aliquot in an elongated pipeline containing hydrophobic carrier liquid. The aliquotcan be analyzed by adding at least one reagent to a sample aliquot which selectively reacts with the contained analyte. A reaction product is of interest as a selective analyte, is directly proportional to the concentration of the reaction product, and is measured by a suitable detector. The inherent sample properties of a sample can also be measured without the need of adding chemical reagents. According to the method, a simple and accurate test can be carried out on the sample in a microliter volume system by using a long-term tested wet chemical analysis method, and meanwhile, a remarkablesmall volume of waste is generated.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring analytes in discrete aqueous isotherms. More specifically, the automated analyzer of the present invention is adapted to analyze microliter-sized aliquots such that the analyzer can be placed at a remote location, eg, for monitoring water quality. Other application areas are also suitable for the present invention, including industrial process monitoring and bioreactor monitoring. Background technique [0002] Automated analytical devices and methods for performing chemical analysis on a series of samples are known in the art. This device enables rapid, continuous and reliable sample analysis for a wide variety of analytes. A prior art device includes the use of A continuous flow device for polymer analysis tubing where the tubing includes silicone or fluorocarbon oil to preferentially wet tubing or distributor surfaces. The use of these materials was found to greatly reduce cro...
