Abstract

An augmented reality optical system includes a waveguide structure including a waveguide layer supported by a substrate. The input and output gratings are located within the waveguide layer and are laterally spaced apart. The input light from the display is made incident on the input grating. Input light is coupled into the waveguide layer and travels as a plurality of guided modes in the waveguide layer to the output grating. The input and output gratings provide phase matching such that the guided modes are continuously coupled out of the waveguide layer by the output grating along the output grating to form output light. At the same time, the light from the scene is transmitted vertically through the output grating, so that the output light and the light from the scene are combined by the user's eyes to form an augmented reality image.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119 to US Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 572,109, filed on October 13, 2017, based on the contents of this provisional application and the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety. into this article. technical field [0002] The present disclosure relates to augmented reality (AR) systems, and more particularly to waveguide-based optical systems and methods for AR systems. Background technique [0003] AR systems are used to add virtual objects to the real visual scene the user is observing. An example type of AR system is wearable and utilizes eyewear in the form of glasses, goggles or helmets worn by the user, and is sometimes referred to as a head mounted display (HMD) system. AR systems typically include an optical system configured to allow viewing of an object or scene while also adding augmented objects to the actual object or directly viewed scene. [0004] AR s...
