[0061] The present invention relates to plant cells, plant tissues or plants having reduced expression of a wild-type protein, wherein the wild-type protein has at least about 75% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 over its entire length. The inventors have discovered that such a plant cell, tissue or plant has increased resistance to Geminiviridae compared to an otherwise identical plant cell, plant tissue or plant expressing a wild-type protein. More particularly, the inventors have discovered that modifying the gene encoding this wild-type protein, resulting in a nucleic acid sequence encoding a modified protein as further detailed herein, provides resistance against both dimorphic and unicolitic members of the family Geminiviridae . Additionally, the inventors have found that expression of a modified protein as defined herein maintains the vigor of the plants. Thus, the present invention represents an important advance in crop protection.
