Problems solved by technology

However, some of these techniques, such as electrochemical machining and electropolishing, may require one or more electrodes shaped in the form that needs to be machined into the workpiece, and may use chemicals that generate hazardous waste
Also, some techniques may not be effective at reducing surface thickness to a sufficient amount due to the complex geometry of the part (e.g., curved or conical surfaces)

Abstract

A method and system is provided for reducing surface roughness of a diesel engine component. The method and system may apply a voltage to a plasma electrolyte polishing cell. The plasma electrolyte polishing cell may include a diesel engine component and an aqueous electrolyte solution. The method and system may cause a plasma layer to form around a surface of the diesel engine component as a result of applying the voltage to the plasma electrolyte polishing cell. The method and system may terminate the voltage to the plasma electrolyte polishing cell. The method and system may apply a coatingprocess to the diesel engine component.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to diesel engine components, and more particularly to polishing diesel engine components using a plasma electrolyte polishing process. Background technique [0002] Some engine components, especially diesel engine components, may not initially have the surface properties and / or characteristics required to perform certain functions. For example, fuel injection system components for diesel engines may include components with complex geometries, mated components, coated components and / or components that are subject to fatigue, wear and friction. Therefore, even after careful fabrication, parts may require extrinsic features and properties. For example, the surface finish (eg, roughness) of certain components may initially be unacceptable to perform certain necessary functions during diesel engine operation. [0003] In some cases, parts may be machined to reduce surface roughness. For example, processes to reduc...
