Embodiment Construction

[0014] Air injection systems such as figure 1 system) to achieve catalyst temperature control. The system may be capable of injecting air upstream or downstream of an exhaust catalyst to burn unburned hydrocarbons and increase exhaust temperature. One or more mixing valves may also be coupled to the exhaust passage. The controller can be configured to execute control routines such as figure 2 Exemplary routine of ) to adjust the position of the mixing valve while injecting air to a location upstream or downstream of the catalyst based on the temperature sensed downstream of the catalyst relative to the temperature upstream of the catalyst. Injection can also be as image 3 Shown is adjusted based on engine conditions for a hot engine start, or during catalyst warm maneuvers. exist Figure 5 A prophetic example of secondary air injection into the exhaust passage is shown in .

Abstract

Provided are a method and a system for exhaust air injection. Methods and systems are provided for improving catalyst temperature control while reducing oxygen saturation. Secondary air is injected ata location downstream of the catalyst during selected conditions. A mixing valve position is coordinated with the air injection to improve local turbulence and thereby enhance air and fuel mixing inthe exhaust passage, in at least one example.

Description

technical field [0001] The present description generally relates to methods and systems for injecting secondary air into an engine exhaust manifold downstream of an exhaust catalyst. Background technique [0002] Engine outlet cold start emissions generated prior to light-off of the exhaust system catalytic converter can account for a significant percentage of total exhaust emissions. In order to accelerate the attainment of the catalyst light-off temperature, systems have been developed which allow the introduction of secondary air into the engine. These may include, for example, an air pump or a thermal control system, such as a port electric thermal air control system (PETA), configured to inject secondary air into the exhaust manifold, upstream of the exhaust catalyst. The injected air at the pre-catalyzed location reacts with the remaining unburned fuel in the exhaust. Additionally or alternatively, injection of secondary air may be supplemented with additional fuel, ...
