Abstract

The present invention relates to an activation system for locally activating the nervous system in the human eyes and the brain by non-invasive pulse therapy to enhance the residual vision in the presence of a visual field defect. The activation system comprises an applicator used for directing an electrical current to the eyes and/or the brain and stimulating the blood flow and activating nerve cells, especially the visual system nerve cells and retinal ganglion cells; a pulse generator which is used for generating an electrical stimulation signal; and a data processing and control unit for providing a patient-specific sequence of stimulation signals. The applicator has at least two electrodes that can rest against the subject's head. A replaceable stimulation electrode is secured to theapplicator such that the stimulation electrode rests in the temple region of the patient's head at the left and right sides of the eye. The applicator has at least one arrangement for non-invasively determining the blood flow of the skin and brain and determining the oxygen saturation in order to improve the stimulation effect in the use of the activation system in this regard.
