Abstract

A heavy-duty drill pipe used for drilling steeply angled and horizontal wellbores in corrosive environments. It comprises a tubular element (10) with a longitudinal hole (29) therethrough, and includes a connector or tool joint (20, 22) attached at each end for connecting additional heavy drill tubular elements. The tubing (10) and tool joints (20, 22) are preheated, water cooled and tempered to obtain unique hardness, yield strength and impact strength for improved resistance to stress corrosion damage and hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen sulfide environments combination. The tubing (10) includes a number of wear pads or guards equidistant along the longitudinal axis of the tubing (10) to reduce bending stresses by limiting the degree of bending when the tubing is pressed into a high angle wellbore. To reduce the chance of differential pressure and sticking when the tubing is used in steep angled or horizontal boreholes, each wear pad or protection portion (12, 14, 16) is provided with a helical groove (24).
