The embodiment of the invention discloses a book management system and method, and the system comprises an image collection device, a server, a target central processing unit, and a book placement device, the image collection device is used for collecting the image information of a target book; a server which is used for determining the book category of the target book according to the image information and sending the book category to the target central processing unit corresponding to the image acquisition device; a target central processing unit which is used for searching a book placement information table according to the book category and determining book placement coordinates; and the book placing device which is used for placing the target books according to the book placing coordinates. The problem that books cannot be effectively recycled is solved, the book placement coordinates of the target books are determined through the server and the target central processing unit, and then placement of the target books is achieved. The books can be automatically recovered only by placing the target books, and the books are recovered and managed through the book management system, so that resources are saved, and waste is avoided.
