In a method for operating a spinning or winding machine having a plurality of work stations arranged side by side, each of the work stations has: a yarn feeding device for conveying yarns; a leading-out device, which is used for leading out the yarns; a winding device, which is used for winding the yarns on a reel; and a yarn storage device, which is used for temporarily storing yarn loops generated during splicing. At the beginning of a new yarn batch, a batch-dependent optimized starting curve of the winding speed is determined at at least one of the working positions by means of a control device, and a yarn loop in the yarn storage device is detected at the at least one working position by means of at least one sensor. The winding speed of the winding device is set according to a signal of the at least one sensor. The measured optimized starting curve is taken as a rated value of the winding speed to be preset to other working positions of the spinning machine or the winding machine for processing the same batch.
