[0036] Institutional ethics committees approved blood and tissue collection and written informed consent was obtained. We analyzed blood samples from women with singleton pregnancies collected from low-risk and high-risk outpatient and labor and delivery departments. All women were followed as expected from registration until delivery. Human placental tissue was collected from preeclampsia and uncomplicated pregnancies delivered by elective cesarean section. Placental tissue samples were processed for RNA extraction and maternal plasma from the same patients was collected for analysis (n=14 PE and n=14 controls). Placenta were harvested from another group of patients for immunohistochemical studies (n=5 PE and n=5 controls).
