Abstract

A fuel cell system having a fuel cell stack in a housing includes a compressor providing compressed ambient air to the fuel cell stack and a ventilation system connected to a suction side of the compressor to provide ventilation to the housing and cool an associated voltage monitoring unit, which may be located inside or upstream of the housing. The ventilation system may control the valve to supply air from the compressor outlet to the housing to heat the housing and the stack when either or both of the housing and the stack have a temperature below an associated threshold. The ventilation system may include a second valve to control exhaust gas from the housing based on a temperature of the housing or stack. The stack exhaust may drive a turbine connected to the compressor. The heat exchanger may be positioned to cool compressed air from the compressor prior to the compressed air from the compressor flowing into the stack.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to ventilation and cooling of fuel cell systems for motor vehicles. Background technique [0002] Electric motors are increasingly used in motor vehicles as a replacement for conventional internal combustion engines, such as gasoline or diesel engines. In this context, as an energy source for an electric motor, not only a rechargeable battery but also a fuel cell in which reaction energy of a fuel (such as hydrogen) and an oxidizing agent (such as oxygen) is converted into electric energy may be used. A common type of fuel cell is the so-called proton exchange membrane fuel cell or PEM fuel cell. In this case, the fuel cell has two chambers separated by a membrane. The hydrogen enters a cavity where it splits at the anode into electrons and protons, which are able to penetrate the diaphragm. Electrons are absorbed by the anode and migrate to the cathode, which is disposed in another cavity. This cavity is supplied wit...
